Audience responses

The three different type of audience responses are negotiated, preferred and oppositional.

The negotiated response is where even though the audience receive the message in a media product they will modify the message to suit their own opinions and belief. For example with a french McDonalds advert that ran in 2010 they were saying that anyone is allowed in McDonalds, however some homophobic people may think that because McDonalds allows gay people in the restaurants that they are gay, or that because it is France, they will think that french people are gay.

The preferred response is when the viewer will receive the message and accept it, so for example if a McDonalds advert came on, the viewer might start to lick their lips or maybe salivating because they want a McDonalds

And the oppositional response is where people will reject the message completely. Carry on the theme of McDonalds some people will think that McDonalds food will make you fat, this may because some people they see go into McDonalds are fat and that they might go in regularly, or perhaps the majority of people in McDonalds are fat, therefore they are rejecting the McDonalds advert and won't go there.

Audience Theory

How each audience theory relate to my 3rd choice idea (Music Video)

With my Christian music video people might be suggested to convert to Christianity because of some of the shots that I may film in my music video. If some of the my christian beliefs are put into the video then it might start to have effects on certain people. The hypodermic needle theory might without myself knowing inject a theory or message int peoples thoughts by the video.

With the reception theory relating to my music video if I create a certain storyline for the video it might be interpreted in different ways. If I have certain message in the video then people might get offended by the message in a way that it wasn't intended.

Some people might have a strong opinion with the story in my music video and therefore might start to write about it on social networks or blogs, they might want to express their opinion and criticise my music video or compliment it. Active consumption with my music video might start a string of arguments due to some non-chrisitans complaining about it, or perhaps some christians complaining about it.

With passive consumption it won't affect my music video as much. This is because the viewer won't really care much about the music or the video. They won't have much of an opinion of the music video, also the passive consumer might just read the review or a blog of the music video, therefore they don't really count as a audience member.

With my music video if it has a sad plot which turns into a happy ending, this might help some christians who are having a sad part in their life start to escape from reality and imagine themselves in the story. The storyline might provide pleasure for some christians who will think that it can only get better from their situation that they are in. Some viewers may actually relate to my music vide, if I show the stresses and difficulties in life then they may have gone through the same sort of things.

Reception theory:
How audiences interpret film and television and create their own meaning for it.
Individual interpretations are influenced by people's experiences, background and prejudices.

Hypodermic needle theory: The hypodermic needle theory suggests that mass media has a strong effect on audiences. it can influence a large number of people directly and uniformly by shooting or injecting them with the appropriate message.

Active Consumption:

  • Goes out of there way to express an opinion
  • actively watches as an audience member
  • Create a buzz about the media
  • Sometimes Social Network users

Passive Consumption:

  • Don't have an opinion or a strong opinion.
  • Does not take much in as an audience member.
  • Doesn't pay much attention.

Users and gratification: Users and Gratification theory is an approach to understanding why and what people do with the media;

  • Emotional Release
  • escape From reality
  • Pleasure
The gratification theory is understanding why people pick a specific media product.

Reception Study/Theory

"Reception theory provides a means of understanding media texts by understanding how these texts are read by audiences. Theorists who analyze media through reception studies are concerned with the experience of cinema and television viewing for spectators, and how meaning is created through that experience."

Vantage Point:

With certain films you can have a different feeling towards the film because of different factors. Who you're watching the film with is one of the factors. For example if you are watching a vantage point with some friends at home then you might be taking the mick of the film, or messing about while the film is going on. This is because you won't need to quiet down for anyone as cinemas have rules about talking during the movie. This behaviour will make you think of the film less seriously. However if you were watching the film in a cinema with your friends then there would be less noise and therefore you would be more aware of the film and what is happening. At home you would be less concerned with whats going on and might be confused by the film, but at the cinema you would be focused on the film and since you are following the storyline the whole way through.

The people you watch the film with can also be a factor, if you are on your own then you will concentrate on the film more on the film and you will be able to follow the plot, however as I have previously said if you are with friends then you might get distracted when talking to them. After watching the film you and your friends might have a discussion about the film and may have different opinions on the film because of how concentrated you were while watching the film.

Weather can also be seen as a factor. If you are watching a horror film with the lights turned off at night then, then you will be more likely to be scared as you might start to think that you are in the horror film.

If you're in a bad mood then then you might find it hard to concentrate on the film.

Other disturbances while watching a film may be due to people eating from bags, the hands rustling to get food might make you lose concentration while watching the film. Also people may slurp their drinks which can be very distracting as well.

Surroundings can also distract people while they are watching movies. If you are at  a friends house and they have some interesting features in the room you are watching the film in, then you might be tempted to start to look at the different features of that room, which could lead to you missing important parts of a film.

If you are watching vantage point and have never encountered terrorism before then you might be shocked when you watch the film, as the terrorist activity happening. However for someone who is watching the film and has encountered terrorism first hand they won't be as shocked to what is happening in the film, and they will also feel that they can relate to the film from personal experience.

How producers would define their audience through research

How producers would define their audience through research

With finding out how many listeners a certain radio station has compared to their rivals a producer would go on to the Rajar website. Rajar stands for Radio Joint Audience Research, it provides the figures for how many listeners each station has received from their broadcasting range every quarter of the year. So for the last quarter of 2012 Radio 1 had 11,091,000 listeners out of 52,352,000. If you were a producer of Radio 1 then you would be very happy with the listening figures that Radio 1 shows, but there is one other radio station that has more listeners than BBC Radio 1. That radio station is BBC Radio 2 which has 15,109,000.

As a producer of Radio 1 you would need to look through each programme throughout your schedule and find out which show was losing the listeners and then do something to change that. However they also look at what type of people listen to each of their shows. BBC Radio 1's target audience is between 15 and 29. If one show has too many listeners outside the target audience range and not enough people listening from the target audience ag group then the producers will do something to change this and try and get more of their target audience to listen in. A very good example of this is Chris Moyles. He was the presenter for BBC Radio 1 from 06:00 - 10:00. However even though he was incredibly popular most of his shows listeners were in their 30's or early 40's. Therefore because Chris had been presenting the breakfast show on BBC Radio 1 for 8 years and was older than other presenters that BBC Radio1 employ they decided that it was time for Chris to hand over the reigns to a younger presenter. The younger presenter would help attract more of the target audience to the show because he would play more popular tracks and try to make the show interesting  for the target audience. With Chris Moyles he will most likely move over to BBC Radio 2 as a lot of BBC Radio 1 presenter move over to radio 2.

A League Of Their Own Audience Feedback

A League Of Their Own Audience Feedback

To start off with tvguide.com gave the show a 7.4 rating and IMDb.com gave the show a 8.6 rating. The majority of websites say that they love the show because if you don't love sport then this show will help you like it more and the banter throughout the show is incredibly funny. As a female viewer of the show said "I love this programme and I'm a girl, and I don't do sport!!!" Other quotes from viewers include "Best sports panel show ever!" and "This programme is on the of the best highlights of the TV week". Some reviews say this is the first sport show that men can sit with their partners and both of them can enjoy the show.

A League Of Their Own has seen a lot of positive reviews since its first airing. However there have been some complaints by some viewers.

However with all the reviews there are negative reviews about the show and the panelists. "Good programme but Flintoff and Redknapp are dead weight. Watch them, then watch Phil Tuffnell on A Questions Of Sport and see how its done", "I'd rather watch Madonna's film with the same name than this".

One website does comment on saying that it is not as sport-centric as A Question Of Sport so you might feel that you can't use your expertise on sport as much in this programme.

A League Of Their Own Representation

A League Of Their Own (Representation).

Background:

With the background colours for each team and the presenter, we expect to see bright colours that stand out. Also the colours are expected to be similar colour coordinated so that the can match the rest of the scenery. This is shown by the teams having red for Redknapp's team and blue for Flintoff's team, and those two colours together make purple which is the background colour for James Corden the presenter.

The bright lighting helps to show the presenter, guests and captains. With the bright lighting the audience can see every part of the set because in different parts of the show there are physical challenges that each team needs to take part of.

The layout of the show has a smallish table in the centre for the main presenter with two large table on either side of him for the two different teams of three to be placed. Then far stage right is  curved wall, which in the final round is lifted up to show the sporting challenge.

When you tune in to watch A League Of Their Own you expect to see the same colours in the background, the same scenery and the same layout of the show. If anything is different it might be a technical error, or James Corden (presenter) will mention that the scenery has had a makeover.

Each show of A League Of Their Own you expect to see James Corden presenting the show, and you also expect to see Jamie Redknapp and Andrew Flintoff as captains, if for some reason one of the captains can't make one of the shows then a replacement sporting celebrity will be called in to be captain. Precious guest captains include: Gabby Logan, Lee Mack, Peter Crouch and Dermot O'Leary. Previously Georgie Thompson and John Bishop were the guest regulars for each team. But since both have now left the show Jack Whitehall is the only guest regular.

For some shows celebrities have been in the audience, including Mike Tindall and Louis Smith.

The format of the show is expected to be the same throughout each show. The first round is a matching up round in which the teams have to match up sporting celebrities with an item that is related to them. After that round a sporting challenge is set in honour of one of the sporting guests. Then to finish off the show there is a quick fire round in which the time the teams get to answer questions is determined by how long the teams can sustain a sporting challenge.

With A League Of Their Own sporting stars are represented as fit athletes, in great shape, and on then sports show they are always coaked into doing some sort of physical activity to do with their sport, as they are represented to be brilliant in that area of their field. They also make jokes about Harry Redknapp and getting injured all the time, this is due to the fact that Jamie had to retire from football early due to injuries and the fact that even after retiring from football he has still managed to get injured. Also with places being represented they have always made fun of John Bishop and his Scouse accent, because of this they pretend not to understand the scouse accent and make fun of it sometimes mimicking it.

Genres of quiz shows

Genre is a type of category for media production content. For quiz shows, there are many different genres, these can range from Comedy to TV, and from Sport to Music.

Their are many different types of quiz shows such as:

A League Of Their Own (Sport)
Mock The Week (Comedy)
Never Mind The Buzzcocks (Music)

Each quiz show tries to target a specific audience, for example A League Of Their Own would try and target sport fanatics, even though the creator of the quiz show was quoted saying "this is a comdey show for those who don't like sport".

Never Mind The Buzzcocks is produced for a niche market as it targets modern music lovers. Mock The Week however is produced for mass market as it targets anyone, because the show is a comedy designed show anyone who has a sense of humour is targeted for this show.

Each quiz show is distributed through different TV Channels. Quiz shows are normally created through a specific channel. The channels will see which type/genre of target audience they want to appeal to and they will start to plan the quiz show from their. For example comical quiz shows are usually replayed on Gold and Dave. BBC One and BBC 2 distribute a lot of different types of quiz shows, they have a quiz show for music (Never Mind The Buzzcocks), a sport quiz show (A Question Of Sport), and Comical Quiz show (Mock The Week) to name but a few of their genres. The BBC produce a lot of different genres of quiz shows as they want to attract as many viewers as possible, so that they beat the competition.

Different types of quiz shows require different types of lighting and technology. For example a sports show like A League Of Their Own requires videos for some questions, and the videos will need to be edited for the show, as they have questions which include a mixture of videos. The lighting for the show will need to be bright as the audience will want to see the different presenters and celebrities on the show.

A League Of Their Own (TV Show)

A League of their own is a sports quiz show aired on Sky1 and Sky1HD. The first show was aired on Sky on 11th March 2010. As of 14th December 2012, there have been 6 series and 68 episodes. The main presenter is James Corden whereas the two captains are Andrew Flintoff and Jamie Redknapp. these two captains are very well known sports stars, therefore the audience will know who they are.

The construction of content layout for the show includes 4 rounds, the first being a simple rank three different sporting figures in order of a certain question. The next round is for both teams having to guess the right answer about a sportsperson. The third round includes a physical challenge in which a sporting figure who is in one of the teams is celebrated for his/hers achievements, then both teams have to compete and try and do something that the sporting figure has done. The final round is a quick fire round in which the time the teams have to answer the questions is determined by how long a member of their team can sustain a sporting challenge.

Each round has a mixture of challenge and comical issue which creates an enjoyable atmosphere.

The filming of A League Of Their Own is done in BBC’s Elstree Studios; however the first 2 series were filmed in Pinewood Studios. The show is filmed in front of a live audience as sometimes in the audience a major sports star is watching and the presenter James Corden tries to get that star involved in the show. Once Mike Tindall (Rugby Union Player) was in the audience and both teams started to joke around with him, as they were trying to get the audience involved.

The quiz show was created by Paul Brassey. As it is a sports quiz panel the show applies and targets a very niche market. Paul Brassey actually said that it would be “an Olympic standard comedy show for anyone who loves sport and a fun-filled half hour for those who don’t”. But even though the show started out as a 30 minute show it has now been extended to a 1 hour show.

The design of the set is very colourful and bright. Behind the main presenter is a purple and white background, it is designed in round cornered rectangles where the rectangle glows purple and the bars in between each rectangle is white (as shown in the picture below); meanwhile Andrew Flintoff's team background is instead of purple is blue and Jamie Redknapp's background is red. These bright colours make the show stand out to the audience. These three colours (Blue, Purple and Red) are the main colours throughout the set. The floor is blue with a white number (referring to the series number).

The fonts are very bold and clear so that it is easily visible for the viewers, they are also colour coordinated by wherever they feature on the set and for which captain/presenter.

The lighting for the show is very bright as they ned o make sure that every Guest, Presenter and Captain is visible for the audience to see. Also the lighting needs to create a friendly atmosphere that attracts the attention of the audience.

In the intro credits of the show a variety of sporting images of the two captains are shown. This is to make sure the audience knows who the captains are, also the presenter is shown as well in the intro credits. Before the opening credits they show what happens before the show, for example behind the scenes such as make-up and also an xbox connect where the audience and the show guests play different games on the xbox.

The words used in the quiz show are very informal, formal and factual at different parts throughout the show. The factual speech is used when interesting facts are told about some sporting figures, or when someone is talking about statistics. The more informal language is used to joke around with some of the guests and when the teams are talking normally. Sometimes though formal language is used with important guests.

3 ideas

1) Documentary:
  • Football/Sport - I am a keen young sport fanatic.
  • Christian Youth - As a christian it will be interesting about the life of a Christian teenager.
  • Music - Different genres of music.
The reason why I have choosen a documentry as 1 of my media products is that I feel with the 3 different documentry ideas I ave choosen, I could produce a great piece of work with each idea.  I have enough knowledge of watching documentries and with the ideas I have to produce a good documentry.

2) Music Video:
  • Christian Music
  • Popular Music
I have choosen music video as 1 of my 3 media products because I have a good amount of expierence making music video and I feel I could create a music video to a good quality.

3) Quiz Show:
  • Sport
  • Music
  • TV
  • Films

Quiz Show

With Quiz Shows aren't mass produced, as the majority of the public enjoy watching famous people or members of the public answer questions. The members of the public who watch quiz shows like to laugh while watching the shows, therefore each quiz show that is made will try to include some sort of comedy because that is the target audience for most quiz shows.

Personally I like the challenge of answering difficult questions, but I also like the enjoyment of watching people competing in difficult tasks.

A great quiz that shows both mental and physical challenges to the participants is A League Of Their Own. As this show also includes sport celebrities performing physical challenges which the audience finds comical which can class this quiz show as part comical.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzIyACCoAOk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj2Ro7rVCIM

However Quiz shows can be classed in different genres:
Mock The Week - Comedy
Never Mind The Buzzcocks - Music/Comedy
A League Of Their Own - Sport/Comedy
A Question Of Sport - Sport/Comedy

Because each quiz show has a specific target audience they are aiming for, this could make it a niche product.

For specific quiz shows for certain genres they target a specific audience. So for A Question Of Sport there main audience will be sport fanatics. However a quiz show like Never Mind The Buzzcocks will target Music lovers. The majority of quiz shows will have some sort of comedy involved. So even though a show may target a specific target audience they may attract more people who enjoy the show; and the extra viewers may not like the type of quiz show they will still find it enjoyable because of the comical value in the quiz.
