The negotiated response is where even though the audience receive the message in a media product they will modify the message to suit their own opinions and belief. For example with a french McDonalds advert that ran in 2010 they were saying that anyone is allowed in McDonalds, however some homophobic people may think that because McDonalds allows gay people in the restaurants that they are gay, or that because it is France, they will think that french people are gay.
And the oppositional response is where people will reject the message completely. Carry on the theme of McDonalds some people will think that McDonalds food will make you fat, this may because some people they see go into McDonalds are fat and that they might go in regularly, or perhaps the majority of people in McDonalds are fat, therefore they are rejecting the McDonalds advert and won't go there.
Could you maybe explain the film before you explain the different audience responses? Because it would help to realise why The Preferred reading would side with "Harry" etc. You need to include a link of where you got the information from if possible. The examples are good as they relate to film but you suggested print advert, maybe you could create a example for that too to progress your post? Is there some images you could include to make it more visually interesting?
ReplyDeleteTo help the reader understand your examples better, you could very briefly explain the plot of 'Harry Brown', the film you chose, as unless the reader has knowledge of this film already the examples don't help much. You have also said that you will give a brief description of each response before going into more detail, so I assume your post isn't finished?
ReplyDeleteYou have defined each term well, however you haven't included sources of where you found this information. Also, your definitions are character-based, as opposed to a general definition of the term. This would make it hard to apply to another media product.
You could also include pictures to make the post more appealing, or a clip from the film you used as an example.
It seems from the comments you have changed this post. I would have rather seen the previous updated from the feedback the above students have given you because what they say above still applies to the new post.
ReplyDeleteYou have a lot of work to do I am afraid Nat because you have only passed 1 gc. You have hoever shown you have some understanding you just need to make sure you push your discussions further to pass GC1, 3 and 4.
